Why Dental Hygiene?

My World

After graduating from San Diego State University with a bachelor's in Liberal Studies and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, I began my career as a teacher. I loved being able to reach the children in a way that no one else could. I have a passion and dedication for teaching, but it wasn't until my dad got veneers, that I realized my true calling. After years of hiding behind a large gap between his two front teeth, my dad was finally confident and much happier in life.
It was then that it occurred to me how uplifting a smile can be, it can truly difference in someone's life.
I decided it was time to dig a little deeper and discover what career would make me smile for the rest of my life. Dental hygiene was always of interest for me, which makes sense since I come from a family in the health care field. Observing my current dental hygienist was the icing on the cake. Watching and listening to her interactions and skills with her patient was inspiring and motivating. It was then that I realized I wanted to further my skills of teaching to the area of oral health. I truly enjoy bridging my knowledge of education with my passion in health promotion and disease prevention. Dental hygiene is not only a career choice, but an important role in making smiles on a daily basis.

A Cute Story from Grandma

Grandmas always make life better. My beloved grandma was diagnosed with breast cancer in early 2015 and started with a round of chemo therapy treatment. I tell this story not for the empathy, but because of a story I will never forget to this day.
When I asked her how she was doing, her only complaint was one of a true saint. Due to the chemo therapy and weakened immune system, she was encouraged to wear a mask when around people. She told me that when she attended mass, the hardest part of the day for her was that she loved smiling at people. Now that she has to wear a mask, no one can tell that she is trying to send a smile their way. Even in her weakest moments, being able to brighten other people's days with a smile is her greatest pleasure.
Smiles just make life better, just as grandmas make life better.

I grew up in San Jose, CA with my beautiful family of seven. I love and miss being closer to my three brothers and sister. However, my heart lead me to follow my high school sweetheart and create another family of my own. My husband and I have been together since 2002 and have two beautiful fur babies (cats). Yes, I would be a crazy cat lady if he would let me be.
