Patient Care

ORAL HYGIENE

Why do we educate our patients? If not us, then who? The etiology of periodontal disease is greatly altered by how our patients take care of themselves on their own. We only see them maybe twice a year, so they have the ultimate decision of the progression of their oral health. Oral hygiene education can help guide patients in making the best decisions for their future. Attached is a document that shows some of the steps we take as hygienists to give provide tools and knowledge to alter the progression of periodontal disease, caries, malodor, and many other areas of concern. We want our patients to be healthy, so they need to know why they have to do the work!

PERIODONTAL EVAL.

Periodontal evaluations are an essential aspect for dental hygienists. Patients are often unaware of the effects of plaque on their bone, gums, teeth, and overall health. Understanding and evaluating the risk factors can guide hygienists in better treating and setting goals for their patients. The attached document shows an example of my understanding of periodontal examinations during patient care. As noted under the classification on my patient, systemic conditions play an essential role on the progression of periodontal disease, as well as the effects of periodontal disease on systemic conditions. Educating our patients on the interrelationship of their conditions will be essential in management of their periodontal health.

Clinical Skills

Calculus detection is a clinical skill that comes with time and practice. I have made strides of improvement from junior year to this first year in senior clinic. This clinic review form shows an example of a patient that I completed an URQ of SRP on a medium heavy calculus level.

Clinical Skills

This document shows my ability to effectively scale and root plan a medium calculus patient with 100% efficiency.
